A 'Red Team' consists of professionals with a background in intelligence and security, ideally with a mix of particular skills. It is used to test the security of a particular facility or area by operating as an intruding or hostile element. This allows the Red Team to audit a particular location for vulnerabilities by looking 'through the eyes of' a malicious element.
Typically, a Red Team will posess a blend of various qulifications, areas of expertise, and mindsets. This crucial aspect gives it the capability to assess vulnerabilities in multiple areas at the same time, leading to a more comprehensive assessment of a location's security level. The creativity inherent to the team is essential to test for multiple scenarios, sometimes at the same time.
Crucially, a Red Team should not only assess the direct physical security of a location (such as cameras, locks, etc.), as many security vulnerabilities are caused by human error or negligence. Therefore, the team should also asses the capabilities, readiness and alertness of any staff employed at the location it is auditing through methods such as social engineering.
